Old Cairo ..... Rehabilitation
The project is a unique example of successful cooperation between the Ministry of Tourism (the Tourism Development
Authority) and Cairo Governorate. It includes the restoration of 350 old houses and shops not only by redesigning
and restoring their facades, but also by solving the constructional problems and upgrading their utilities (water
, sewage, electricity..)in a complete harmony with the old spirit and tradition of the place. There are other
components of the project like Fostat commercial center (souk) , the development of the bus stop,the fire station
and rebuilding a 5Km fence.
Main components of development can be summarized as follows:
1- Restoring of Old Cairo buildings:
Our goal is to revive the cultural heritage by restoring 350 residential buildings in Fostat and its historic surroundings by reviving their facades, internal parts, ceilings, walls, infrastructure (water, sewage, and electricity), roofs, windows, stairs and fences.
2- The development of the bus stop
The bus stop is located near Amr Ibn al Aas mosque to serve residents by 16 bus lines transporting 10000 persons daily. The place was supplied with seats, shades, wastepaper baskets, light bulbs to ensure safety and discipline.
3- The development of the Fire station:
Wood ceiling of old houses and churches are restored in an architectural style that depended mostly on materials derived from rocks and stones to conform with the historic spirit of the place.
4- The development of the police station and the fire station
During the process of restoration , the up grading of the police station appeared as a must.
5- Fostat commercial Center (souk)
Fruitful cooperation between the Ministry of tourism and Cairo Governorate steered tourism development based on religious tourism to carry out the project of Fostat commercial center for Egyptian handcrafts.
6- The pottery village
36 units of pottery production were established, 100-200 m away from el Fostat Center, in a scientific way to protect the place from pollution.
