Fostat commercial center for arts and Egyptian handcrafts

The project stretches over 3000m2 in a one floor building divided into 40 commercial shops, a restaurant and a cafeteria. The project aims at placing the handicraft and shopping tourism within the targeted development scope of the place by adding new tourist products that links the urban community to historic place ; dating back to old ages ( related to the three heavenly religions) . It revives the traditional handicrafts by assembling artists, designers and craftsmen in one place exhibiting delicate pieces of arts before Egyptians and foreigners in a well arranged tourist atmosphere.

Project accessibility


The center is located in the heart of Old Cairo, near Amr Ibn al Aas mosque and directly facing the entrance of the churches complex. It is near the public bus stop and Mary Gerges underground station.

El Fostat center for arts and handicraft:

It is mainly a development project to revive the old Egyptian handicraft by mixing modern trends to traditional heritage to create new tourist products that can activate handicraft and shopping tourism; thus, many job opportunities can be offered for the benefit of the local community.
Main goals of the project:
1- Considering Fostat Center as a pilot project to develop and to revive the traditional handicraft that ceased to exist.
2- Offering a new original tourist product that differs from Khan EL Khalely products.
3- Linking residents, children and adults to the place whether by teaching them simply the basic rules of the traditional craft, or by raising their awareness about the importance of tourism in order to ensure good relations between residents and visitors.
4- Adding more value to old crafts related to our Egyptian heritage; being major part of our magnificent history and honorable civilization.
